http://www.serpentine.or...ages/advice_frank01.html5 9" is 110lbs plus 9 x 5.5lbs which equals 159.5lbs -10% (15.95lbs) equals 143.55 which is 10.253 which means that I am 0.45 pounds above my perfect racing weight. Salad for lunch today. Does anybody agree with this formula? I only stumbled on it because I have lost a bit of weight lately mostly through working. I was then interested in how this could effect my running. I have heard one or two runners in the club comment that they need to lose a pound or two from time to time and I wonder what system they use?

I miscalculated mine slightly because of a dodgy conversion but that puts me around 1lb over based on the 10%. As it says 5 to 10% im still a decent weight I would say. No need for a crash diet just yet.

I'd need to cut my arm off to reach that weight..8 kgs to loose.. i need to stop eating for a month to reach my 72 kgs.. thought i'd get closer this year..but i tend to loose concentration and then eat too much..

Well would you believe it! I've checked my calculations twice and even allowing for the full 10% reduction the outcome is that I'm 22 lbs / 10Kg under-weight for my ideal racing weight. I think the solution is that both Lyndon and James should forward their next fortnight of desserts to me and I 'll eat them on their behalf. Or to speed things up even quicker I could have just one weeks worth of desserts from Evatt and Phil!!!!!

Haven't weighed myself is ages (don't get to caught up in that sort of thing!) but based on what I think I am I'm about 4 to 5 kg overweight! (not including the 5% reduction for long distance runners)! To be honest, I wouldn't like to be any thinner!!! Fatter if anything! I like my food!

Great post Lyndon.
I have 300g to lose to reach my race weight to the "less 5%" mark for distance runners. Yes! nearly there!
I believe it's possible to eat less and more healthily if you stock the cupboards with the right foods, and have self discipline.

As a man with a long history of being a proper fatty (none of your 4 or 5 kilos overweight for me, try 50kg. If your going to be overweight, do it properly!) I find I am very mindful of how much and what I eat now since I lost my weight.
Looking at that calculation I am 1/2 lb under my normal running weight but still 7 1/2lb's over a distance runners weight.. I am not sure I could lose too much more as since loosing the weight I look gaunt enough as it is!

I think I have got it right this time. It makes more sense to do this using Kg instead of stones. Otherwise its a bit like running a 5km in miles. Who would do that . I have rounded off my kg as a few grams here and there doesn't really matter. Basically the Stillman table is used to give the ideal weight for a normal man.First 5 foot of height equals 50kg,plus 2.495kg for every aditional inch, which based on my height is 72.4kg For a distance runner You then minus 10% which gives 65.2kg as my lowest ideal race weight and minus 5% 68.2kg as my highest ideal race weight. My weight this morning was 65.kg I have since had a big lunch and put on 0.9kg and am 65.9kg. (Approximate figures) In summary.. Normal weight is 72.4kg Ideal distance runner weight is 65kg to 68kg My current weight is 65.9kg. I think my natural weight quite literally hovers around the ideal range. I don't think I tend to go much under or over it.I always used to think I was slightly over weight for a runner so this is a bit of an eye opener.

According to the formula I am about 16lb underweight for my height. However, I'm not entirely convinced by it, as much as I respect the rest of Frank' write ups. I think Body Mass Index (BMI) graphs are more useful as there is considerable variation in physique. (Although even BMI graphs have been criticised). From the graph below my BMI is about 19, which is bang on. Click on the image to get an expanded view. The colours refer underweight, normal (green), overweight (purple), & obese (yellow). Having said all that, weight can vary due to hydration. If I do a 3hr long run in summer my weight can drop 2.2kg, of which I can put back 2.0kg in an afternoon. |

I am not convinced about BMI though as it seems like a rough guide for the general public and doesn't appear tailored towards athletes. Some people with high muscle mass can even come up as overweight when they may be perfectly healthy. A gentleman on another forum may have hit the nail on the head with this statement.... When you feel strong, you're training well and running fast and non-runners start worrying about your health, about your cadaverous look... You should be nearing your ideal racing weight then.

57.5kg at 10% less - only if I was proper elite like mo farah. And 60.5 at 5% less - well maybe for a marathon. Eating a bit less a bit more often if the right stuff maybe the way forward.

It's a very interesting question, Lyndon. There are no easy answers either - size of frame is one variable which the BMI index doesn't take account of. Choosing your parents carefully is another. Some people only have to look at food to put weight on, whilst others like myself are lucky enough to be able to eat absolutely anything with very little effect. However, as a general principle: Just like training, consistency is the key. If you train consistently, weight should remain fairly static. If you're weight varies, training becomes much harder. However - before any of the ladies tell me off, I reckon that fellas are lucky on this score!

Both my parents have stupid fast metabolisms so I am pretty lucky on that score.I spend a large portion of my salary on food but I am very active too without the running.
I try to eat as much organic fruit and veg as possible and aim to avoid added sugar foods and preservatives as much as I can.
My diet is by no means perfect but I am at least mindful of what I eat.
I think if you are constantly active it is very likely going to lead to a static weight, particularly if you watch what you eat.
