One of my favourites was the Woking 10. This was well known for the fast times and a busload of Croups went several times.,

Martin Rees won in 2003. Other Welsh winners include Steve Brace, Denis Fowles, Nigel Adams, John Robertshaw and Mike Critchley in the men's race, and Melanie Ellis, Frances Gill, Hayley Nash, and Sally James in the ladies'.

The bus used to stop at the Crown, near Bath, on the way back. On one occasion we left a member there, Dennis Busher from Cowbridge.

He visited the gents and we assumed he was on the coach and we left without him. A year or two later he became Mayor of Cowbridge.

Thanks for reminding me, Phil. Woking 10 was a cracking event which I went to many times, including pre-Croups days. Because it was a lightening fast course and many athletes travelled there looking for fast time, we organised a club bus many times.
I ran my PB of 49:18 there in 1987, when I was in cracking form. 8 runners broke 50 minutes, and 4 of them were Welsh. A group of 13 of us went through 5 miles in 24:40, exactly what everyone wanted, until Greg Newhams lost patience and put the boot in at 7 miles. He came second in 48:58, outsprinted by Watford's Kevin O'Connor (48:56). I was third, Paul Howarth 6th in 49:25 and Adrian Brown (Newport) 8th in 49:50. Other Croups: 18 Richie Bullen 51:45; 20 Steve Rhind 51:49, 41 Keith McGeoch 54:01, 65 John Dimond 56:40, 72 Paul Mussa 57:00, 86 Jeff Aston 57:55, 107 Kelvin Sullivan 59:23, 185 Steve Fice 62:20, 392 Dave Amos 75:12. In the Vet Men 40-44: 20 Dennis Bird 61:54, 32 Jeff Wood 65:59. In the vet men 45-49: 7th Derek Williams 60:32, 13 Mal Farnham 63:10. In the Vet men 50+ Alan Bladen was the individual winner in 60:14 (which I think was his PB). Lyndon Smith (of fish & chips fame) was 24th in 69:37 and his old mate Ken Bray 33rd in 78:05.
Eryl Francis led our ladies home in third, clocking 58:42. Sally James of Newport won the ladies in 55:22. Many of my generation might remember Sally in the Police, more recently she used to serve in the Rose Inn (though sadly not anymore) - Sally and I often used to catch up on Tuesday evenings after the race. Julie Dimond was 30th in 81:57 and Yvonne Bullen 32nd in 82:48 (running a lot quicker these days!). In the Vet ladies Ruth Collishaw was 4th in 66:10 and Val Aston 12th in 81:55. He came second team in the men and 4th in the ladies.
Oh - to be young again!

Nice to be reminded of this. My PB too, by 2'38" in 57'00" dead, 1985. Had tremendous burn up with 'Huggy' over the last 1.5 mile & finished a few seconds in front of him. Always was considered short but that's how things were back then.
Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast!

1985 was another good year, and Phil Hexter ran that day too. The first 12 men beat 50 minutes, with Keith Penny winning a sprint finish in 48:21. That was par for the course for him. Croups results (with many members using it as a warm up for London:

I'd forgotten about that one. I was actually disapointed as I wanted to get under 53 minutes.
Frustratingly I only managed it once officially, in the handicap 10. I did the Rhondda 10
in 51.50 ish once, but somebody set off the starting cannon accidentally, so there were no official times,
and ran an 11 mile (ish) Castle's leg at 51/52 minute pace the year Mick had an epic battle with Bernie Plain.

Some of the other races of that time were the Reading 10, a favourite, as I beat the hour
for the 1st time, the Vale of Neath 10 (aka the Vale of Death), which was my first 10,
the Bedwas Mountain race and the Machen Mountain race.

The Vale of Neath, Bedwas and Machen races were very old fashioned. The VON and Machen
races being run from the local rugby clubs, with free bangers and mash after the race, and Bedwas
run from the Bridge End pub, with free food and beer after the finish.

I went on a pub crawl with Woody and Boffo after the Bedwas race. We started at the Bridge End,
then the Fisherman's around the corner, the Travellers, and Black Cock, ending up in St Joseph's,
where I had to stop - no stamina, unlike Woody and Boffo (both ex St Joseph's rugby props).

Fear not, Phil. I know you ran 52:59 on 30 January 1983 in the Handicap 10. And they printed your name in Athletics Weekly, so it's official.
The place to have clocked sub 53 should have been on our Dutch trip that year, where we ran a 10 mile race in Barendrecht on 15 October. You were 25th in 54:42.
For the benefit of our members today, Errol Alexis, then 47, finished third M45 in 62:38. Now we're talking class!
