The Monday night summer speed sessions have come to an end - Phil wrapped up the season with a cracker - I'd never heard of an 'Oregon Circuit' before - now I know. I'd like to say a huge thanks to Phil for leading these sessions, and to David McDonald for standing in when needed. Thanks guys. Bring on the hills!

Hills have begun, well done everyone who came along tonight to charge up Brandreth Road.

Just a reminder - it will be 6.30pm every Monday through to April, meeting at Wild Gardens Road. As it's going to be dark by the time we finish - please, please, please, bring your hi-viz, lights, fluorescent clothing, all the things you need to wear to be seen.

Great session tonight Jon - thanks for organising it, and I'll make sure I leave work earlier next time so you're not all waiting for me!

Bump / Nudge / whatever social media parlance currently is...

... but gentle reminder to everyone coming to hills on Monday that it would be great to see everyone in high viz or lit up with running lights. We run Torrens Drive tomorrow, always a good idea to be seen and stay safe. Thanks

Hello. I would like to join you for my first ever hill session tomorrow. I can’t make for 6.30, but should be able to make it to tomorrow’s night’s hill by 6.40. Would that be ok? Thank you! Anne

The full training schedule is on our website - link here The group starts at 6.30pm with a warm up lap around the lake so just join them later at the hill reps location.

Sorry just seen this - the bit about a warm up lap around the lake isn’t quite up to date (I don’t think it says this on the website anymore?). We warm up by running to the session location, in some cases that means we’re running part of the way around the lake, but tonight’s session is on Llandennis Avenue, so we will just run straight over to there.

Anne, are you able to meet us at Llandennis Avenue?

Hi folks,

Just wanted to post following last night’s session and the unexpected need to switch to another hill.

First of all, for those who were there, apologies again for being late, and thanks to Steve P for taking charge, and to Mike M for quickly finding an alternative route to a very busy Cefn Coed Road.

Whilst I’m hopeful that last night was a one-off in terms of how busy it was, I do think we could do with having an alternative hill to Cefn Coed Road as a contingency. Whilst I know a lot of us like this hill, unfortunately it has also become popular with lots of other training groups as well, and with the numbers we had last night it just wasn’t safe to use it.

I think the hill that we used on Farm Drive last night was good for a shorter session - and we could possibly use this in place of one of the Llandennis Avenue lamppost sessions if people want some variety - but it is too short to use as an alternative to Cefn Coed.

I’ll have a look around, but if anyone knows of any “long” hills in the area on quieter roads (ideally around 600-700 metres), do let us know.

Hi folks,

Those of you who were at hills tonight will know we’re planning to restructure the Monday night sessions a little.

We’re planning to trial a switch from the current 6 week cycle to a 4 week cycle - as we do now, this will alternate between one week of long reps and one week of short reps. We are proposing removing Cefn Coed Road from the schedule, and also replacing the shorter Llandennis Avenue with a session on Farm Drive.

The main reason for this is safety considerations - the last time we tried to run on Cefn Coed Road it was very busy both with cars and other running groups. As our Monday night sessions have become ever more popular, there is also no longer space for us to group together safely at the bottom.

Similarly, on Llandennis Avenue, the week where we do longer reps isn’t such a problem, as everyone meets at the bottom and sets off in smaller groups, but for the shorter reps where we meet at the crossroads and run as one big group, it is getting quite tricky with the number of cars using that area. In addition to the safety considerations, on a 4 week cycle you will be able to gauge your progress over a shorter period of time.

Mike Murphy did make a suggestion tonight that we could move the session back to a 6:45 start. This may help us a little in terms of there being a little less traffic about, and I know that some people struggle to make the 6:30 start, so the proposal is to start at 6:45 and follow the following cycle:

Week 1 - Lady Mary / Brandreth Road
Week 2 - Torrens Drive
Week 3 - Llandennis Avenue
Week 4 - Farm Drive

There are two weeks left of the current 6 week cycle, so we plan to start the new cycle starting on 18th December.

I’d like to know what people’s thoughts are on moving the start time back to 6:45, as we want to ensure this is broadly workable for everyone.

Hi Jenny - 6.45 works for me, as does your 4 week cycle plan. I've never done Cefn Coed Road, so don't know what I'm missing there, but last night was definitely an issue with the traffic and size of the group.

Thanks to you and Jon for putting so much effort into making these sessions work for us all.

Thanks Chad - although it's just carrying on everything that Phil and then David have put in place over the years, and thankfully we have had a lot of help from Karen this year too (certainly much appreciated in my case as I'm always making mistakes and forgetting things)!

I've posted on Facebook as well, but just to let everyone know we are going to stick with 6.30pm for the next two week's until we get to the end of the current 6 week cycle, we will then switch on Monday 18th December to a 6.45pm start, and trialling the new 4 week cycle. We will ensure that the website is updated prior to the change taking effect to show the revised schedule and start time.

Hi folks,

Just a reminder that tomorrow night is the last session using the current 6-week rotation, and that we will be meeting at 6:30pm at Wild Gardens Road, before heading over to Llandennis Avenue for descending hills.

As of next Monday (18th December), we will be meeting at 6:45pm, and will start a new 4-week rotation.

There will be no hill session on Monday 24th or 31st December

Sorry, the above should read that the new rotation starts from the 17th December, not the 18th

Just a reminder that from tonight onwards we will be meeting at 6:45pm at Wild Gardens Road for the Monday hill sessions. Tonight will also be the last hill session for 2018, we resume on 7th January 2019.
