Not everyone's cup of tea, I know, but pleased to report that Steve Way achieved his target of a Gold Medal (awarded to the top 10 finishers) by finishing 9th in the Durban - Pietermaritzburg Classic over 86.73 km. earlier today. Judging by the split times on the website, Steve judged his effort to perfection, edging into the top 10 at 79 km on the notorious last vicious climb at Polly Shorts. The race was won by South African Bongmusa Mthembu in 5:35:34, so it was a really close race. Steve was the first non-African to finish and was third in the M40 section. Steve's time equates to 4:02 per kilometre. Many of you would have marvelled at his 3:54:52 to win the Barry 40 last year, whilst this year he had to withdraw at 20 miles due to injury - a move which was clearly the right one in the light of today's result. I know Steve does plan to return to Jenner park to regain his Barry 40 title. Next year's race will be on Sunday 11 March.

Congratulations also to Matt Lynas of Thames Hare and Hounds on finishing 5th in the over 50 section in 7:10:19 - comfortably inside the 7:30 qualification for a SILVER MEDAL. Matt ran in the 2008 Barry 40.
