As you know, parkrun is officially known as a timed run, as opposed to a race.
That's the official line, but no one told the runners that last Saturday.
First up, it was a beautiful morning, and turned into a stunning day.
The Blackweir event was held on the alternative course, and the conditions led to a spate of impressive performances. The age grade percentages are often a better indication of merit than the actual finishing order, and Croups had the 5 highest age grade performances.
Each is worthy of mention, but I'll concentrate on the top one.
Angharad Mair took 11 seconds from her parkrun PB to record 18:33, and an age grade of 97.57%.
That was the highest age grade anywhere last weekend, and parkrun globally is now seeing 120,000 performances each week, so that's pretty significant.
Angharad Mair will make no secret of the fact that London, on Sunday week is the target.
Just to refresh your memories, last year she ran 2:57:46 to decimate the UK age 55 marathon best by 6 minutes. However, last October, Treena Johnson of Dewsbury bettered that with 2:56:19 at York. Needless to say, Angharad wants the record back. I've already notified Athletics Weekly about this possibility.
I should stress "possibility" because the weather can always intervene and destroy the best laid plans. However, I'm sure you'll all be willing Angharad on in her attempt. Of course, there will be somewhere between 30 and 40 Croups, going by previous years, and we'd like to wish each and every one of you every success.
