Dear Les Croupiers runners

Having discussed the matter with Jeff Aston and Phil Cooke this morning, I am pleased to announce that the first two races in the 2016 off-road championship with be the 4 mile Kymin Hill Race (2pm Saturday 2 January, registration at Monmouth Boys School Sports Centre from 1pm) and the 9 mile River Rollick (11am Sunday 17 January, race HQ is at Mundy Playing Fields, Thornbury, no entries on the day). Both come highly recommended. The Kymin is organized by our very own Rodney and the cakes on offer at the River Rollick would put Nadiya Hussain to shame. Enter soon for the River Rollick. Enjoy!

It's a while since I've done Kymin, and I haven't done the Riverbank Rollick before.

Those that have done one/both and have a decent memory Blink could you have a think about the terrain? Stuart B is keen to take part in some races, so before entering either Kymin or RR he and I need to consider whether the course is suitable. The main things to consider are
- is there space for runner and guide to run side by side, or are there parts of the course where you have to run single file?
- how rough/varied is the terrain? Odd lumps and bumps and obstacles are fine, and we can slow ourselves up to accommodate them. Endless tree roots, potholes, stiles and low-hanging branches etc around the length of the course that would slow us to a walk would make it near impossible to run.

A description of the course is more what I'm after, rather than an opinion on suitability - the latter is Stu's decision to make!

Massive respect for even thinking about it. Kymin is mostly single track, roots, stiles and rocks. If I have water on my glasses it's not fun.

Riverbank is mostly wide tracks but soft deep mud and water. From memory there are about ten stiles. There is about two miles of single track. It's flat deep mud rather than technical fell running. Recommend fell shoes for the grip.

Both races are easy to bail out of having road shortcuts back.

from memory some bits of the Kymin are quite narrow paths-not sure if enough room for 2 people to run comfortably side by side

Hi Karen

There are several races that are likely to be included in the off-road championship that would be more suitable in terms of terrain and lack of obstacles, such as the Pentyrch Hill Race (apart from one section that is single-file), the Forest of Dean Half Marathon and the Tintern Trot. The list of races will be decided this Thursday. I'd be happy to run with Stuart on some occasion (assuming I can overcome a gammy left knee that stopping me from running for now).
