Training yesterday I think I came down awkward on a piece of uneven pavement and may have pulled part of my hamstring. I believe it's relatively minor but I'm wondering what the best thing to do is and if it is likely to prevent me running the Cardiff Half. First time I have picked anything straight up on a run in 8 years, perhaps I'm getting old. I have avoided using Ibuprofen but wondered how long I should stop training? Or if I should?

Hi Lyndon- shame you have tweaked your hamstring- how it goes depends on whether it is just a pulled muscle or whether you have actually torn muscle fibres, whichever has occurred DO take Brufen- partly for pain ,but also helps reduce inflammation in muscles and quicker healing-400mg 3xdaily, (and stop if you get indigestion!), DO ice it 15-20mins as often as you can , DO rest for a couple days at least. If the `pull` is just a tweak then massage/physio may help, and start GENTLE training after a few day-but go gently,if muscles are torn deep vigorous massage will tear fibres more so don`t do, if the muscle is torn you will definitely NOT be fit for the half marathon- it will take at least 4-6 weeks for a tear to heal properly-if you go back too soon you will risk worsening the tear and ending up with more scarring- gentle swimming/walking in a pool is a great way to gently test out whether it is healing and if hamstring able to stand up to running- if it hurts a lot STOP!!! GOOD LUCK! scholey

I'm thinking I may have just pulled it as it seems a lot better today! Many thanks for the advice Julie!
