Just caught up with yesterday's Guardian (Monday, 26 May 2014) and found an interesting article ....on the back page of the sports' section. Leather smashes 1 mile world record, 29th May 1954.....60 years ago on Thursday. Should we celebrate or have I got it wrong? http://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2014/may/25Edited by user 27 May 2014 16:30:09(UTC)

You haven't got it wrong, Mike. Unfortunately, women weren't considered strong enough to tackle such distances. The longest distance they ran in the Olympics was 220 yards in the 1950s (880 yards was tried earlier, but discontinued because it was deemed that several of the ladies had finished in distress). Even into the 1970s the longest distance contested by ladies at Olympic was just 3000 metres. First Olympic Ladies Marathon not until 1984. It all seems amazing now. Most road events had no ladies competing until the late 1970s / early 1980s. However, some equalities still remain. Why else would the ladies cross country races be barely more than half the distance of mens?

True equality would mean one race regardless of gender.

True equality has to include getting a race technical shirt in women's sizes.

Thanks all. The article does give a considerable insight into attitudes and prejudices of the time (my formative years). Even today, very few people know of her efforts. Incidentally, an interesting comment at the time from an extremely popular newspaper .... running over 200(metres/yards) " would induce premature ageing" ...... have times changed? It would be nice to get kit that fits us properly! Despite some inequalities women do run just as good as men. The history of women running is very interesting, women attempted to running marathons before the rules were change. They were spit at pulled out of races and even disqualified but because of their perseverance women today can run any distance they like. Yes anything Men can we women can do just as good!
