Eat well the day before a long run as well. I'd normally have a bowl of porridge, toast with peanut butter (a superfood imo!) and jam and a glass of orange juice. Sometimes a banana also. All about 1-1.5 hours before. I always carry water/diluted orange on runs longer than 10 miles. I couldn't imagine not drinking for anything longer.

To echo Lyndon, yes get those trainers straight back out Alun and get out running today, even if it's an easy 3 miles. Us oldies need young fasties like you to keep us from retiring it's just a small bump in the rollercoaster of running......hope you are feeling ok after it today. You will be back kicking dust in our faces

Thanks for posting your experience Alun. I think it's a timely reminder for anyone with any aspirations of being an endurance runner of the importance of nutrition. I've seen experienced marathon runners blow three months of meticulous training by simply not paying attention to detail regarding the most important meal before the race itself i.e. the evening meal prior to the race. Having said that, I always eat before my Sunday training runs - muesli and toast and honey works well for me, but of course, these things are very personal. I even find I can eat within 5 minutes of starting my long run and still be OK, so long as I start easy enough, to allow digestion. That fuel source then kicks in when I most need it. And obviously, the longer the run, the more important the nutrition becomes. As anyone who has ever run a competitive marathon will testify, running out of available fuel can happen frightening quickly!

Mick,
But you have the pleasure of eating on the porch looking at Pineapple trees and palm trees in Barry - we are not all so lucky.
Are you guys going out this sunday ?

Thank you, James. Of course we're going out. Some may have hangovers, but we'll be going (probably a tad slower after Brecon).

James - will be good to see you on Sunday. As Mick says, Gwent League and post-race drink may make it quite leisurely, but we don't mind!
