This Sunday bike race has caused quite a bit of controversy with all the road closers. Apparently the roads will be closed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is being hotly debated on radio Wales. I'm not against the race but I don't understand why the organisers didn't have a rolling road closers like the marathons where they open the road after the last runner has gone past. Just be aware if you are travelling anywhere.

It has caused an amazing amount of publicity, apparently by poor and late pre contact with local citizens along the route.
BBC Wales had an hour phone in, discussing the problems and the callers were reporting that most of them had received little consolation from the organisers regarding information when contacting them. Some householders will be "marooned" regarding car movement for 12 hours (6am to 6pm) on the route. I hope this doesn't affect next year's event as even an MP has spoken out against it.
It is a good lesson for us in Athletics organisation to keep the public informed of any events that disrupt everyday life for the general public.
Tracy, they are using wave starts, for safety, as in the Manchester 10k race and they have 15,000 competitors followed by a pro road race. I just hope that the public get used to the upheaval and adopt it as an annual event, as the Cardiff Half Marathon, Gt North and London has.

I'm one of those residents affected by this and the communication has been extremely poor from the organisers. Luckily for me, I've been aware of this event for some time and knew that the roads would be closed, but it was only on Tuesday this week that we actually received something from the organisers informing us of what was going on. There will be a lot of people who have no idea that this was going to be taking place and it will come as a shock on Sunday.

Signs have gone up since last weekend, but to be quite honest they don't say very much. They don't even suggest that the roads are going to be closed!

Whilst I plan to be outside supporting this (just by the mini roundabout near Lisvane and Thornhill railway station if anybody's taking part in the event and will be cycling past, or anybody fancies joining me to support it), I will need to pick up my daughter at some point in the afternoon when she gets back from her Guide camp. This means I'll have to park my car somewhere on Saturday night where the roads won't be closed, and if everyone in the area tries to do that it will cause chaos.

One thing I'm hoping though is that they'll also need to close the lanes between Lisvane and Pontprennau for this, so I may take the opportunity to go for a run along there whilst there's no risk of getting run over!

I don't think people will stick to the road closures, if there's a way of getting through I think they'll be taking it. I'm in the velothon myself but will head out expecting traffic at some point. If there's a lot of controversy about this it's going to back-fire on cyclists (probably road running races too) and may affect any chance of this becoming an annual event.

Having done the Etape (a closed road stage of the Tour de France open to enthusiasts) this event is 'bold'. The Etape is only 8000 riders, with a harsh cut-off, road closures in mountain areas (grateful for the off season trade) keen locals and no pro race on the same day.

This is 16000 riders, a slow cut-off, a pro race following it and in an urban area.

I hope that Cardiff pulls it off and uses it to get the Ironman (up for tender next year). Cardiff has to sell itself to business and young talent and this might help.

However it looks fun. I'm in wave 18 - anyone else up for 140km?

I believe Berlin city made an estimated 3.6 million pounds when it staged the velothon, that in its self will properly be all the right reasons for Cardiff to stage it again.

I hope Cardiff doesn't get the Ironman.
