I think for me it is to build on what I have learned this season, be patient, (particularly if things get tough or even good!) keep doing what works but keep looking for ways to improve.

To keep listening and to keep my ears more open and my mouth more shut, and most importantly to enjoy it.

A few targets I would dearly love to hit next year. Just going to work hard and keep believing that I can hit them.

These posts are always interesting. And it's worth reading the 2017 thread too.
Not sure what goals people have in private, but remarkably few appear to want to make them public.
Hence full marks to James for being brave enough last year.

For me, 2016 was a terrible year, injured for 8 months....
Hence, 2017 was all about first learning how to run again, and then trying to enjoy competitive running whilst establishing realistic targets. After competing for over 50 years, my underlying philosophy is always one of "I'm incredibly lucky to still be able to do this".
Having said that, inevitably the driving forces which have kept me going this long still continue to drive me.

A few months into my rehabilitation this year, I agreed to try a track session with Rob Evans at Leckwith. Rob is almost 3 years older than me and another of the original 12 members of the club. Although he was quite a bit quicker than me, and he has enjoyed a great year, I immediately enjoyed the buzz of at least trying to run as fast as my body would safely allow. Sadly, Rob has been injured quite a bit since, but that never deterred me from going in on my own.

Stepping out onto a track is a potentially intimidating experience. Of late, maybe a dozen runners at the most go to Leckwith on a Tuesday around 6.30. You may think £4.20 for a session is expensive, which it is. I see it as an investment - an investment in myself. No way can I run as quick on the roads as I can on the track.

Of the other athletes currently on the track, Phil Cook is the next oldest (at 48). So, at 62, my sessions are solo sessions. Other recent attendees - Matt Hurford, Mark Joyce, Lyndon Tudor-Maisey, Glyn Fletcher, Dave Williams, Richard Jackson-Hookins. Carwyn Jones and Matt Clowes are often there. A few weeks back I watched Dewi Griffiths run 12 x 800 off a minute recovery just a couple of weeks after his 2:09:49 in Frankfurt. Inspiring stuff.

OK, so you may say they're all super-fast athletes. Correct, but are they super-fast because they train on the track, or do they train on the track because they are super-fast (and want to continue to improve)?

My best times for 2017 are all on the website, and if I can match them in 2018 (at my time of life) I'll be very happy. But, the important thing is, I consider that training on the track gives me the best chance.

Would like to get my 5k time back down to under 18:30, preferably 18:15 (would like to say sub-18 again, but think that might be too ambitious).
38:30 for 10k would be nice.
1:25:something for a half.

Now or never. Year of cracking myself to more professional type of runner and taking care of what and when I do. Including stuff I eat & drink. Just 100K weeks doesn't always give the right effect. In numbers, PB's in all distances should be fine, cause they all crap now :D

Sorry all for not getting down here for a few months now but I have not forgotten you, I will be back shortly. After an abysmal 2017 where I was plagued with Achilles injuries. I am now getting my running back on track I am about 3 - 4 weeks away from doing my normal standard training runs now which were 6 - 7 miles long. I am currently running 7k at the moment at a steady pace (around 30 - 31 minutes) and doing that 3 - 4 times a week. It has taken me the best part of 10 weeks to do that as it is not because of endurance but treading carefully (pardon the pun) not to reinjure myself which has happened once when I was trying to get back but I think I was stepping it up too quick. Anyways as for goals this year they are:

1. To try to get in to the castles vets team but I understand time is not on my side, I am definitely not going to rush it, I will just see what the next few months bring.

2. Come down and train with you all more, particularly the Sunday runs which was key in getting some of my best race times in 2013 and 2014. Hopefully will be running with you all in the next 2 months.

3. Avoiding injury. Do not want to have another year like 2017.

Well I have two main aims 2018

1-Raise over another £1000 this year for the various charities I run for.

2-And even though slow by some of the posts here Laugh ...

-5k-under PB for Park run by year end so 23:59.
-10k-under 45 mins by Cardiff 10k.
-H/M-under 1:50 by Severn bridge Marathon.
-M-under 4 hours by loch ness marathon.

good luck to everyone aiming higher this year BigGrin

Interesting post. But what running for the enjoyment of it? Yesterday I buried my 23 yr old cousin who died unexpectedly and suddenly on a trip to Australia. It made think that we worry about the smallest things. Sometimes it's enough to complete a race or be select for a race without worrying about time and what leg we run. You needed to enjoy running first otherwise it becomes a chore, sometimes a break is needed. Another way to get your mojo back to assist on the couch to 5k. What was good on Sunday was seeing some of the first couch to 5k runners receiving awards which shows what can be achieved when you put your mind to it. My big running achievement was the Barry 40 which I'm doing again ( but not to impress a certain gentlemen! I don't think I need to do that!) However getting my licence was the biggest thing as I have been trying for a long time! Never give up on anything and try not to be too disappointed if you fall short better of your target. It's better to fail trying than not to try at all.

Achieved my first ever Marathon last year thanks to Croups. :)
Could not have done it without this amazing club.

This year I am aiming to do longer runs but not quite marathons though LOL!

Not really that concerned with PBs or going faster any more.
I always feel sad when I bomb it around a park run and it is all over because the run has finished too soon.

I have found that my happiest scenario is just running for hours in general.
There is something extremely therapeutic about experiencing long runs.

So 2018 for me is about getting the miles in and breaking routine.

I have signed up for Rhayader (Bargain at £23.92 for 30k) and I will also be doing Sandom 20 this year.

Might find some other lovely runs to do too.

Good luck to you all for 2018.

Croups on the move woop woop!

If your doing Rhayader I would say that the right kit is critical Stu! Make sure you are really well prepared for it.

You can take a layer off but you cannot add one. The weather can change dramatically with the elevation.

I was lucky when I did it as we ran into a blizzard but if you get heavy rain it will be a real challenge and you want to be prepared for that!

I would wear a waterproof woolly hat, arm warmers gloves and a couple of layers if I did it now and was very fortunate last time to finish it! I was fortunate with the weather too because snow is much kinder than rain!

Good luck with Rhayader and everything that you plan on doing this season!

Most times this thread never gets updated from one end of the year to the next.
So here's an update having done 2 races in 2018:
#4 - before I'd raced at all in 2018
My best times for 2017 are all on the website, and if I can match them in 2018 (at my time of life) I'll be very happy. But, the important thing is, I consider that training on the track gives me the best chance.

21 January - Handicap 10 miles (in terrible conditions) 72:28 (best in 2017 73:56)
3 February - parkrun 5 km (in perfect conditions) 20:44 (best in 2017 21:10)

I said track training gave me the best chance. However - lots of people are now training on the track on Tuesday nights. That means I now have people to run with, compatible in terms of speed. That has made all the difference. Don't just take my word for it, ask anyone else who trains there.
Added to which, both the above races and on New Years Eve at Old Father Time, I've raced the entire distance with Libby.
So to maximise your performance - two lessons:
It's the training you do (and how you recover), and,
It's the company you keep.

You are 100% right Mick the track makes all of the difference and really develops your speed, pace judgement and confidence!

I am going to go out on a limb and say if I avoid injury and keep the track going I will crack 16.30 before the end of April. It really does make that much difference!

If you want to get faster the track is a must I would say. The more people go the more people you have to train with and everyone can work together to get faster.

To run faster you have to stretch yourself a bit. There is no better place to do that than on the track.

It’s great to see the numbers growing and as they grow it makes it easier for people to find someone to train with.

Track sessions are hard work but are thoroughly satisfying and you will really see your times fall if you stick with it!

We have had 3 regular visitors to the track just break 16 minutes at parkrun and it is no coincidence. It really is an inspiration to see them develop and demonstrates clearly what can be achieved if you make it a regular part of your training.

It is only a few minutes a week and and just over £4 but it is so worth it!

Focus on Short Course Championship Races:

Ready to go faster, to run quicker, to enjoy speedy races.

I have registered for Summer Series 2, 3 and 4 miles.
I am on 5k V for Victory to run Cardiff streets.
Sizzler 5k and The Chase 5k, I am in, too!

5k goal below 17 minutes.
I plan to do every park runs however the cold, the sun, the rain (which to me is very much like the sea!)
