Just a week after his 86th birthday the ever so gracious and remarkably talented long distance runner Ed Whitlock has died at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto.

In a statement issued this morning his family wrote:
“The family of Ed Whitlock is saddened to report his passing on March 13, 2017, of prostate cancer at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. His 86th birthday was on March 6th.

His wisdom, guidance and strength of character will be greatly missed by his wife Brenda, sons Neil and Clive, and sister Catherine. The family requests privacy at this time.”

Although he was an accomplished British club runner in high school and in university Whitlock put the sport on hold while he embarked on an engineering career in Canada. As a master’s runner, he quickly established his credentials becoming the first septuagenarian to go under the 3-hour mark with a 70+ world marathon record of 2:59:10 at the 2003 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, an event to which he became particularly attached.

A year later he improved that record with a 2:54:49 at age 73, again in Toronto. Eventually he set world master’s marathon records for age 75+, 80+ and, most recently, 85+ with a time of 3:56:38 M85 last October 16th, 2016 in Toronto. In all he set roughly 25 world master’s records over distances from 1,500m to the marathon.

Alan Brookes, the race director of the Toronto event, an IAAF Gold Label race the past three years, enjoyed a longstanding friendship with Whitlock.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Ed Whitlock, The Master. The Legend. This is an enormous loss to Canada and the global running community. Somehow we thought Ed would just go on setting records forever. We are especially saddened at Canada Running Series.

“In 2003 Ed shocked the entire running world when at age 72 years he ran 2:59:10 at STWM, to become the first 70-year old on the planet to go under the magical 3-hour mark. Ed was, overnight, every marathon runner’s hero. He then ran the 2:54 with us the next year – a race he often said was his finest performance.

Ken Young's take on Ed Whitlock's passing (www.arrs.net)

Ed Whitlock (CAN) 06 Mar 1931 to 13 Mar 2017

It is sad news indeed to learn of Ed Whitlock's passing from prostrate cancer, just two days ago.
I will miss Ed's e-mails, making sure that I have not only his latest exploits, but those of
other Canadian veterans.

There is not sufficient space to detail all of Ed's amazing accomplishments. He dominated the 70+ age
divisions, setting standards that may never be surpassed from 3000m to the marathon.

Marathon- age group records for V70, V75, V80, and V85. Twelve single age records- ages 68/85
30 km road- age group records for V60, V65 and V70. Six single age records- ages 63/73
25 km road- single age record- age 63
Half Marathon- age group records for V70, V75, V80, and V85. Ten single age records- ages 68/85
10 miles road- age group records for V65 and V70. Six single age records- ages 64/72
15 km road- age group records for V65, V70, V75, V80, and V85. Thirteen single age records- ages 66/85
12 km road- age group record for V65. Two single age records- ages 67 and 68
10 km road- age group records for V70, V75, and V80. Ten single age records- ages 63/84
8 km road- age group records for V65 and V70. Eight single age records- ages 63-70
4 miles road- age group record for V65. Four single age records- ages 65/72
5 km road- age group records for V65, V70, and V75. Nine single age records- ages 65/75

10000m track- age group records for V70, V75, V80, and V85. Six single age records- ages 70/85
5000m track- age group records for V75, V80, and V85. Seven single age records- ages 67/85
3000m track- age group record for V80. One single age record- age 80

3000m indoor track- age group records for V70, V75, V80, and V85. Thirteen single age records- ages 68/85

Totals are 40 world age group records and 108 world single age records. This does not include his records
at distances less than 3000m.

Ed's passing is a reminder to us all that there is one competitor that we cannot outrun, no matter how
fast we may be.

Extract from the I – 15 March:

Ed Whitlock, a British-born octogenarian marathon runner, has died at the age of 86, only months after running a marathon in less than four hours. His time at the Toronto Marathon last October of 3:56:38 beat the previous record by more than 30 minutes. Although he had been a talented club athlete during his youth in south-west London, Whitlock did not finally blossom as a runner until his later years. By the time of his death, he held some 25 age-related world records in distances from 1500 metres to the 26.2 miles of the marathon, including perhaps his most remarkable achievement – running a sub 3 hour marathon of 2:54:49 at the age of 73.
When adjusted for age, his time was just 2 minutes off the current world record and 3 minutes better than the current British record. His willowy figure became a familiar sight on marathon courses around the world from Rotterdam to Honolulu. In a statement, his family said:”his wisdom, guidance and strength of character will be greatly missed”.
Whitlock, who lived for most of his adult life in Canada, attracted the attention of scientists studying the effects of ageing on athletic performance, prompting experts who examined him to re-evaluate the expected decline in running speeds with advancing years. Michael Joyner, an American ageing expert who took Whitlock through a battery of tests , said he had achieved the goal of “minimal ageing”, meaning his body had declined at close to the lowest possible rate that could be achieved.
Speaking before Whitlock’s death, Dr Joyner told: “The theoretical minimum rate of ageing for endurance sport is 5 to 6 per cent per decade after the age of 35 to 40. The rates of decline in his 50s, 60s and early 70s are just above this. He is remarkable”. What was also remarkable about the whippet-like runner was his attitude to his sport. Even shortly before his death, Whitlock could be found running for up to 3 hours a day in his favourite training spot – the cemetery a few minutes’ walk from his home in Toronto.
He eschewed nearly all the conventions of modern thinking about running, following no training plans or dietary requirements and having no truck with such gadgetry as running watches and GPS trackers. When he ran his record in October, he did so in a pair of racing shoes that were 20 years old. He stretched his muscles only on race days. A modest man, he said he felt uncomfortable when people told him he was an inspiration for their running, or indeed that he had superhuman attributes as an athlete. Speaking in December, he told:”I think it’s pretty ridiculous, to be honest. I’m just an ordinary guy who likes to run a bit”.
