Would like to improve my 5k times next year and was wondering what sort of training is needed to reach my goal. I understand everyone's training capabilities are different just looking for something roughly that's going to help.
Thanks
Alun

The Monday evening hill sessions and the Tuesday evening track sessions are both good for improving times over shorter distances. Usually a good group at each of them so there's a bit of a social aspect to help with motivation if that can be an issue. I wouldn't recommend doing both sessions in the same week though ;-) Schedules are under Training Sessions on the main site. Edited by user 13 October 2015 10:34:38(UTC)

Alun- good question! Maybe speak to the likes of Dave James who was rather quick over 5k. Back in the 70s and 80s (and probably now!), they used to run very high mileage for 5k races and so there is more to it than just doing the odd speed session. Personally my best 5k times have been during training high mileage for a marathon,so it is also about endurance and a mix of easy and hard runs. Maybe replace longer runs with spin classes say twice a week. Also if you can train twice a day occasionally, that can help. Maybe 5k in the morning and spin class in the evening.Sounds like hard work but if it works, I will join you perhaps!

Alan, come and have a chat. Lots of variables to discuss. Not always easy to give a blanket answer on a forum page - which is why it's never good to follow schedules from magazines.

Alan,
pies, golden arches and no exercise for you.. that way I can stay ahead.. don't worry about 5k.. its the 1/2 and marathon that could..
seriously I've a book the loure of running which has lots of details.. its a house brick size .. which covers all the theory etc.. so it has loads on 5k.. maybe of use..
James
ps I'm training hard on hills so I can keep up by next year..
